Hello, I’m Bailey

The Thin Place was born out of a season of struggle. A season where I felt stretched thin and desperately longed to see the goodness of God in the land of the living. The goodness of God showed up in unexpected ways. During that season, the spiritual disciplines laid out in Scripture, the traditions of the Church, and the reminders of His faithfulness seen in liturgial living and the feasts and seasons of the Church calendar all opened my eyes to the hope we have in Christ.

“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” - Annie Dillard Been thinking a lot lately of what I want my reputation and my eventual legacy to be. It’s easy to fall into the trap of “someday I should____” instead of taking manageable steps into being the person I want to be someday now. Do I want to be known for known for serving my community? Then I need to start working something predictable into my routine. Do I want to be known as I hospitable person? Then I should start setting aside a night a week to have someone over. Do I want to have a strong marriage? Then I should start finding ways to connect to and check in with my husband. Do I want to have a strong prayer life? Then maybe I need to start setting aside time to pray a decade of the rosary each morning. Small steps of course add up. They snowball. They become more than we anticipated as what once feels like the monumental step of opening your Bible each morning become the habit of reading a chapter with your coffee. It becomes easy to build the first level once you’ve put the foundation in place. But those small, incremental steps are often the hardest ones to take. Why? Are we overwhelmed by feeling like we are biting off more than we can chew? The Lord promises that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. Are we discouraged because an incremental step feels insignificant? We serve the God who multiplied a few fish and loaves of bread into a feast that served thousands. Why would we doubt that He could multiple our meager offerings, our steps of obedience into something beautiful and life-changing.

This week, I want to encourage you to listen to the words of the Psalmist:⁣ ⁣ Blessed is the man⁣ who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,⁣ nor stands in the way of sinners,⁣ nor sits in the seat of scoffers;⁣ but his delight is in the law of the Lord,⁣ and on his law he meditates day and night.⁣ He is like a tree⁣ planted by streams of water,⁣ that yields its fruit in its season,⁣ and its leaf does not wither.⁣ In all that he does, he prospers. – Psalm 1:1-3, RSVCE⁣ ⁣ I can't speak for your social media feeds, but often mine are filled with scoffers. Scoffers I agree with, and scoffers I disagree with, but I've decided that, even in digital spaces, I will no longer sit in the seat of scoffers, but will instead turn my attention to the law of the Lord.⁣ ⁣ I have also decided that I need to step back from the outrage machine, from the demand that I have an opinion (and a strong one at that) about everything in the news. Jesus doesn't call me to scream into the void of social media that I am right and others are fools, but He does call me to love. It's been a rough week in the news. When I read the news or watch clips from around the world pop into my social media feeds, it's hard not to feel overwhelmed and outraged. But it's also hard not to become calloused and numb, shrugging off the horrors and pretending there's nothing I can do. St Therese of Lisieux wrote, “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.” I cannot swoop in and relieve those suffering in Haiti or Afghanistan. As much as I wish I could wave a wand and end the pandemic, it is beyond my power. I wish I could clothe everyone who shivers as they sleep, feed every growling stomach, love every child who suffers, and bandage every wound. But I am finite and limited. It is easy to become discouraged at what I cannot do, instead of looking at the work God has called and is equipping me to do today. I can love my family and community, I can humbly offering up my trials and sufferings, and I can pray and fast for those in need. If you are feeling discouraged and hopeless today, I encouraged you to fix your eyes upon Jesus and ask Him to show you the little things that you are able to do today to make your little corner of the world "on earth as it is in Heaven."
